Garden Bunny

IMG_4980.JPGHe is fluffy, destroyer of gardens. But he's so cute!!!

Looked it up and I'm pretty sure he's an eastern cottontail. I don't know for sure but if he is then he's still a baby. Maybe a month old if that. He's able to hop around the area and likes to chew bits of vegetation.  I put more cover over the area made of weeds and already dead plants that were there anyway.  Want to make sure they are safe from predators.  We have several large hunting birds in the area and the brush deters them.  The bunnies have dug through the cloth planters as you can see on the bottom of the image.  So much destruction.  The green onions though seem to be safe from chewing though.  There is plenty of mint growing so there is a good bit for them to eat.  I've let many plants grow in the back and it's perfect for a nibbling little family.

This isn't the first time we've had rabbits hanging out where we live though.  In the previous apartment we were at there was a family living in the large table cloth we used to cover the outside plants on the patio.  We were on the bottom floor so the bunnies thought it was left just for them.  It was warm and covered and there were fresh plants growing just for them to nibble.  We didn't even know they were there until it started warming up and we moved the cloth.  Mom and three babies hopped out. One of the babies even coming inside for a second.  We shooed it out to mom where she waited and appreciatively hopped away with her children once they were all accounted for.

What unexpected residents have you had in your garden?

Garden Anole

Cute little baby anole climbing around in my patio garden.  In this picture he's in the lavender plant which has been flowering all summer long.  Just have to keep it happy.

When one of our friends from the Netherlands came to visit we had a much bigger anole hanging around.  She had named him Clouse. At least that's how I'd spell it.  No telling how she would have spelled it. Unfortunately Clouse didn't hang around for very long and there were none to be seen for quite a while.  When this guy appeared I knew that my little garden was still a fairly active place for critters to visit.

Another of the critters are the wasps that come drink from the pots and soil.  I never would have though about insects drinking from dirt but I guess they have more of an ability to pull out the water from different sources.  One wasp really liked the dirt around the moss rose and would come several times in just an hour and return to the exact same spot to refresh himself.

The toads haven't been seen in a while but I'm still hopeful that they will return once the heat lets up.  It's been too hot for many of the usual creatures to come out and play.  The bunnies as well haven't made their nightly appearances so often.  Before I'd see them just hanging out on the grass looking around.  Now I only see then moving across the lawn areas heading to either eat or go home.

Temps are showing a downward trend though and things should pick up for wildlife viewing.

Office Bunny

This adorable bunny has been eluding my coworker for weeks now.  Fortunately he's perfectly happy hopping around an munching grass while I soak up some rays during lunch.  Maybe I'll bring him some parsley soon and have lunch with him.

Some of our friends have pet bunnies and they're just so smart. He's not a pet of course but it's almost like having a little buddy at work.  I do however have a good idea of what bunnies want to eat though.  Parsley is one of a bunny's favorite snacks.  Forget the carrot, ok don't forget the carrot, they're good too.  Also watermelon, bananas, apples, and all sorts of herby greens.  Not too much though or they can get an upset tummy.

Note: I haven't really gotten close enough to know if he's really a him or not.  This may well be a girl.  Either way he's adorable!
